Signal Hill Observation Deck
The rounding of the Signal Hill Observation Deck’s roof is visible from the streets of Kota Kinabalu. It’s nestled amongst the foliage of the city’s lush, green backdrop. Accessible via road or a couple of less-obvious foot paths, the outlook over the city gives visitors a comprehensive overview of the Kota Kinabalu.
Very Short Jungle Trek
One way to reach the observation deck is via a short, 5-minute jungle trek. It’s accessible from the one end of Australia Place, which is located towards the back of the city and winds its way up the side of Signal Hill. The is a petite taste of what Sabah’s longer treks might be like. It’s possible to spot peculiar birds, interesting bugs and even a few of Signal Hill’s resident macaques.
It offers spectacular views of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and its tropical islands and, on a clear day, a sweeping vista from Mt. Kinabalu on the right to Pulau Tiga in the far distance on the left.
Sabah’s Legendary Sunsets
You don’t need any specific venue to enjoy this free activity, in fact, you don’t need to be very active at all. Just ensure that you’re in a comfortable spot facing west well before sunset and wait for the show to start. Sabah’s sunsets are rated amongst the most beautiful in the world, with daily shows that range from amazing to dramatic to dazzling.
The Grand Market
For a sensory experience of a different kind, visit Kota Kinabalu’s Grand Market. The Grand Market has been part of the cityscape for many years and is where fruit, vegetable, meat and fish traders all come together to trade in an jangle of colour, flavour and sound. Walk through to experience a slice of local life and try a few fruits you might never have seen before.
Tanjung Aru Beach
First Beach at Tanjung Aru is a lovely strip of sandy beach with a magnificent view over the islands in the marine park. It tends to not be as popular as you would image during the day, because it gets blazing hot and has limited facilities. It comes into its own at night, however, when the setting sun makes the location magical and attracts quite the crowd.
