The Sandakan Wildlife Encounter is a guided private tour that brings you to the famous Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and the Rainforest Discovery Centre.

This tour package gives your the opportunity to visit the excellent rehabilitation centres and forest reserves around Sandakan, before going to places further afield like the Kinabatangan River and the Turtle Island Park.

The animals in the centres that you will encounter during this trip are considered semi wild. Through a program of minimal human contact and a diet of bland, repetitive food, the various animals are encouraged to forage on their own, teaching them to be self-sufficient to a point where they can be relocated to somewhere truly wild one day.

During the feeding hours, when the young and inexperienced emerge from the forest for a snack break, you will have the opportunity to witness watching the animals up close and observe their interaction with each other. Here, they are usually oblivious to onlookers.

From orang utans and proboscis monkeys to macaques and the sun bears, all the way to the countless birds and insects at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, the Sandakan Wildlife Encounter is an experience not to be missed.

Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre

Located about 25 kilometers west of Sandakan in the state of Sabah, East Malaysia. The centre opened in 1964 as the first official orang utan rehabilitation project for rescued & orphaned baby orangutans from logging sites, plantations, illegal hunting or those kept as pets. Orphaned and injured orangutans are brought to Sepilok to be rehabilitated to return to forest life.

Borneon Sun Bear Conservation Centre

Behold, now you can get close to the world's smallest bear! This very unique species of bear is called the Sun Bear and only can be found in tropical forests in Southeast Asia. The centre is equipped with key facilities including an observation platform, boardwalk and a visitor centre. Populations of Sun Bears are rapidly diminishing due to serious threats from habitat loss and commercial hunting. Increasing protection and guaranteeing survivals of Sun Bears in Borneo is one of the main missions behind the conservation centre.

Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC)

Located in Sepilok, Sandakan is part of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, the home to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. There is a network of elevated steel walkways that allows visitors to view life from above the canopy. These steel walkways and three towers enable visitors to the centre to view over 250 species of colourful birds from 100 feet above the ground. Visitors are able to watch the extremely rare Bornean bristleheads, trogons, pittas, brahminy kites and kingfishers from the observation tower. The RDC also gives visitors a chance to get intimate with nature through its Nature Experience programme which includes a guided walk to the Plant Discovery Garden, Rainforest Walk and indoor/outdoor activities.

Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is located at the centre of the mangrove forest along the coastal land near Samawang Village at Labuk Bay, Sandakan. It is an excellent tour for those who love to watch these unique primate that only found in certain parts of Borneo. It would definitely give you one of the most memorable experience observing the Proboscis monkeys leaping steadily from tree to tree and eventually will go down to feed on young leaves and plants.
