Book and climb Mt. Kinabalu with us in November 2015 and we’ll throw in 1 night accommodation at Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, absolutely free!

That’s right, a free night accommodation in one of Kota Kinabalu’s top, 5-star resort hotels for you to recover in after climbing the mighty Mt. Kinabalu.

What’s the catch?

There is none. After the earthquake in June stemmied the flow of mountain climbers and visitors to the park, tourism to the region has plummeted, and with it the livelihood of many Sabahans.

Our free room night promotion serves to entice climbers back early and stimulate tourism again.

November is a particularly slow month, because climbers are still only able to climb up to Laban Rata at 3,300m and not the peak at 4,095m, as the summit trail will reopen after 1 December.

1 Night Free Resort Hotel Accommodation in Kota Kinabalu

So, to make climbing Mt Kinabalu in November irresistable, we’re sweetening the pot with a free night accommodation in Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa.

This means that after a challenging mountain trek, an overnight on the mountain slopes and a demanding return journey, the 5 star resort hotel on the edge of Kota Kinabalu city will await your tired legs and offer you world-class facilities and service, with beautiful views of the islands in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.

What better way to recover from a draining mountain hike than in the lap of luxury?

Have a look at the our Climb Mt. Kinabalu Package – the free night in Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa will automatically be added when you book to climb in November 2015. Otherwise, do contact us for more information.

Mantanani Islands are often overlooked in favour of the much nearer to Kota Kinabalu islands of the TAR Marine Park, but offers an escape worthy of the extra travel time.

Possibly named for the dugongs, or manatees, that used to be found there, Mantanani is actually 3 islands consisting of Mantanani Besar (big), Mantanani Kecil (small) and a third island called Lungisan.

The jetty from where ferries to Mantanani Island depart is a roughly 90 minute drive north of Kota Kinabalu, not far from the town of Kota Belud. The ferry to the island will then, depending on the weather, take another 45 – 60 minutes to reach the island.

Things to do on Mantanani Island

Breathtaking Scenery

Possibly Mantanani Island’s main attraction is it’s breathtaking beauty; azure blue waters washing against bright, white beaches trimmed with the tropical greenery typical of a Borneo island.

Various accommodation options on the island will shelter you for a night or two whilst you enjoy the natural splendour of the island. Email us with your accommodation requirements and allow us to pair you with the perfect accommodation option.

The sweeping beach is, of course, perfect for finishing that good book or just working on your tan, or from where to enjoy the one perfect Sabah sunset after the other.

Jungle Trekking and Island Exploration

Exploring the island is a fun activity on Mantani Island and allows visitors to get acquainted not only with the jungle, but also glimpse local villages and villagers to see what life in a fishing village is like.

Either trek around the island by foot across beach and jungle path, or rent a kayak and row your way around the island, exploring the waters and shores from atop the surf.

Bird Watching

Mantanani island offers excellent bird watching opportunities as birds nest right on the island, which has relatively few natural terrestrial predators. It is also rumoured to be the only place in Sabah where to spot the Scops Owl (otus mantananenis).

Scuba Diving

Mantanani island is also a notable scuba diving destination with good viz days offering up to 40m of crystal clear tropical waters.

The reefs are in pretty good condition, home to a variety of rays, amongst them blue spotted and marbled string rays, and large schools of fish.

It also offers an enviable muck diving environment with imperial shrimps, seahorses, blue-ringed octopi, ribbon eels and a plethora of nudibranch.

Wreck Diving

Also within easy reach of Mantanani island are the shipwrecks of Usukan Bay, which dates back to World War 2 and are the results of a particularly dramatic few days between what was part of the Japanese fleet and a US submarine, the USS Hammerhead.

The 3 wrecks are named the Rice Bowl Wreck, the Upside Down Wreck and the Usukan Bay wreck. From the logs of the submarine it appears a 4th wreck may lie undiscovered in the bay.

Whatever the case may be, the wrecks today are shelters for a vibrant eco system of sea life that duly thrives on, in, under and around the wrecks, making them popular amongst wreck and deep divers.

A mountain bike tour is the ideal way to discover rare gems on the less-travelled paths of Sabah’s backroads, by-ways and jungle paths. Rustic Borneo went to try for ourselves…

Video of Bike Borneo’s 1 Day Tuaran Tour for Beginners

A beginner ride, the tour took us along the rural areas surrounding the town of Tuaran, which is about an hour’s drive from Kota Kinabalu’s city centre.

There the friendly and knowledge staff of Bike Borneo made sure our bikes were well fitted before leading us along the road to where we crossed the first of many suspension bridges.

Over the course of the next 22km we passed by padi fields, along river banks, through villages and up and down the hillsides of Tuaran.

Being a beginner’s ride it was pretty easy going, but the awesome sights plus the uphills, and even a few steep downhills, provided enough of a challenge to make the ride interesting.

Mt. Kinabalu is Malaysia and Borneo’s highest peak, and being able to walk to the peak at 4,095m, it’s one of the most accessible peaks in South East Asia.

An allotment of 120 people per day are allowed to climb this monolithic mountain. Towering above the coastal plains of Sabah, Mt. Kinabalu is visible from Kota Kinabalu and a delight on the horison.

Rustic Borneo’s Trekking Mount Kinabalu package is a 3D2N itinerary for the intrepid explorer keen on experience the climb and witnessing the amazing sights that Mt. Kinabalu offers.

Including most meals, accommodation, transfers and fees for the park, guide and insurance, the Trekking Mount Kinabalu package is ideal for independent travellers looking for a hassle free Mt. Kinabalu climbing experience.

Day 1: Getting to Mt. Kinabalu

On the first day you travel from Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu Park, the World Heritage Site and the start of the Mt. Kinabalu climbing trial. The journey takes about 2 hours, although could be a little faster or a little slower depending on what the weather and traffic does.

You’ll arrive at the park with plenty of time to explore the jungle paths and exhibits on offer, and spend your night in the cool climate of the park at nearly 2,000m above sea-level. (L, D)

Day 2: Climbing Mt. Kinabalu up to Laban Rata

The next morning you rise early to start climbing Mt. Kinabalu from the Timpohon gate. The next 6 or so hours you will spend amongst lush scenery that markedly changes as you reach ever higher. The trail is physically demanding, although it also has a huge mental component – just keep going.

Before long you will reach the clouds and not long after you will reach Laban Rata at 3,330m above sea level, your home for the night.

Weather permitting and provided you arrive in time, you will be in for a spectacular sunset and the coldest weather in Borneo. Coffee and food never tastes as good as it does at Laban Rata after a long, hard hike up Mt. Kinabalu.

Warm water is limited, so be sure get showered and to bed early, because you will be up and about early the next morning. (B, L, D)

View from above Laban Rata with the Mt. Kinabalu foothills in the background

Day 3: Reaching the Peak of Mt. Kinabalu

You’ll start the last 2km to the summit at 2am. After a light breakfast snack you’ll join the ant trail in the dark, slowly meandering up the narrow path towards the summit, your path lit only by the bobbing head-torches of the numerous hikers.

The last stretch of the walk has no stairs, instead a mammoth, sweeping slab of granite guides you to the peak, which you can see hours before you will reach it. Your target is to get to the peak before sunrise, so that you can find a cozy spot and enjoy the fruits of your effort as the sun breaks over the horizon in the east.

After you’ve had your fun at the peak, descend back to Laban Rata, enjoy a proper breakfast and head back down to the park HQ, where you will enjoy lunch before you hit the road for the journey back to Kota Kinabalu.

Be sure to stretch once you’ve gotten down from the mountain, before you get into the transport back to the city and once you have arrived at your hotel. This will mitigate the stiffness most climbers experience a day or 2 after climbing Mt. Kinabalu.

Let us book your Mt. Kinabalu climbing adventure for you by contacting us with your requirement. Alternatively, see what other Borneo Holiday Packages we offer and let us put together a custom itinerary for your dream Borneo holiday.
